Russia's Large Nitrogen Fertilizer Plant Attacked, Shutdown Until May, Adding Uncertainty to Global Fertilizer Supply

Time:2026-03-19

Russian officials stated on Monday that a major nitrogen fertilizer producer in the country was damaged after being attacked by a Ukrainian drone in late February, forcing the plant to suspend operations until May this year. This development threatens to further tighten the already strained global fertilizer supply.

The affected company is Dorogobuzh JSC, whose nitrogen fertilizer plant in the Smolensk region has an annual production capacity of approximately 2 million tons. The facility caught fire following the attack in late February, and Russia has blamed Ukraine for the incident.

Currently, the global agricultural market is highly concerned about the stability of fertilizer supplies. The prolonged shutdown of this critical nitrogen fertilizer facility will directly reduce the supply of nitrogen fertilizers in the international market during the crucial spring planting season, heightening concerns over agricultural production costs and farmers' willingness to plant. It may also indirectly contribute to global food inflation.
